WHY YOUR OUTFIT MATTERS IN INTERVIEWS & MEETINGS.

In any interview or high-stakes meeting, whether you like it or not, how you dress impacts people’s snap judgments about your competence, ability, and character. Studies show that it takes as little as 7 seconds for someone to form an impression (before you even have a chance to speak!), and 55% of that first impression is based on appearance alone.

Here’s how key elements like color, layering, and style can work in your favor—or sometimes against it:

Color: Colors have a measurable psychological impact. While we often think of the role colors play in branding, the color you wear has an impact on yourself and others. Choosing the right hue can reinforce how you want others to perceive you: trustworthy and reliable (blues), a team player (green), or bold and dynamic (red).

Layering: Layering isn’t just about adding dimension to an outfit—it subconsciously conveys organization, efficiency, and intelligence. A well-layered look communicates intention and detailed minded, qualities that teams and clients appreciate. This doesn’t mean layering a formal blazer over a crisp shirt; it could be a sweater over a moto jacket with layered jewelry.

Style: The style and fit of your clothing communicate non-verbal cues that shape perceptions about your personality, professionalism, and even competence. Structured, well-tailored outfits of course convey authority and reliability—ideal for roles in finance, law, or executive positions. But on the other hand, a more expressive, relaxed styles can send a message of adaptability and innovation, qualities valued in creative fields like tech, marketing, or design.

Ultimately, wearing what you feel best in boosts your confidence, significantly influencing how you come across. While it’s key to understand dress code norms for your industry and company, don’t underestimate how these elements of your outfit can help others see the best in you on a deeper psychological level.

If you’d like to align your personal style with your professional goals, reach out. I work with women (and men) and updating work wardrobes to reflect my clients’ unique personalities is one of my favorite briefs to work with. In fact, I just styled 5 interview looks for a client and she got the job; and now is set with go-to looks for her 1st week!
